Ground Source Heat Pumps

Ground Source Heat Pumps

Introduction

Ground source heat pumps offer a new and clean way of heating commercial and domestic properties in the UK. They take advantage of the geo thermal heat stored in the ground, they can be used on a wide range of building types and their is more than one way to have them installed if you are strugling for space.

Beneath the surface the ground stays a constant temperature so a ground source heat pump can be used all year round, even in the heights of winter.

How it works

Uisng a long length of pipe buried under ground the ground source heat pump circulates a mixture of water and an anti freeze chemical which extracts low temperature from the ground and circulates back to a heat exchanger at the ground source heat pump.

This low heat is then extracted by the refrigeration system and concentrated by the compressor unit into a higher temperature heat which is then used for the heating and hot water circuits in the house.

The ground source heat pump can use either the long length of pipe buried under ground (garden, field) in a looping fashion almost like a "slinky" or if space is an issue then a bore hole can be drilled to a depth of around 100 metres depending on the geographical formation in the area and the pipe pushed down and looped back up again to the heat pump, both techniques deliver as much performace as each other.
